Potential Tropical Cyclone One forecast to become first named storm of 2024 Atlantic season

The first name on the list is Alberto if the storm does intensify into a tropical storm.

ATLANTA — The National Hurricane Center is now issuing advisories on Potential Tropical Cyclone One, located in the Bay of Campeche.

It has winds of 40 miles per hour with gusts to 50 miles per hour, but lacks a well-defined center of circulation to be named a tropical cyclone or storm yet. If it does earn a name, it would be the first of the season - Alberto.

It comes at the beginning of what's forecast to be a very active year, according to NOAA. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a well above-average season this year with at least 17 to 25 named storms when the average number is 14.

It is expected to move to the northwest and into Mexico, just south of Texas.
