After Tuesday afternoon and evening's heavy rains across north Georgia, there is more severe weather expected on Wednesday. And with many metro Atlanta school systems returning to the classrooms on Wednesday, the little ones will need umbrellas at the bus stop on the way to school, but it looks like they will need a kayak to get home.
A Flash Flood Watch was issued early Wednesday morning, which will remain in effect through 8 a.m. Friday.
Most of the state is under a Marginal Risk area for severe weather for Wednesday, while areas to the east of Atlanta and northeast of Macon are under a Slight Risk area for severe weather.
Chesley says that any thunderstorms that develop on Wednesday are likely to be strong or severe with damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, and frequent lightning.
► WEDNESDAY MORNING
Showers will begin to move in from west-to-east beginning as early as 9 a.m. Heavy rainfall amounts are likely.
► WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON
In the afternoon, some of the showers will give way to thunderstorms. Some of them will likely be strong to severe. In any of the heavier showers, flash flooding may occur with little or no warning.
► WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND THURSDAY
Heavy rains are expected to continue into Wednesday night and into Thursday.
Major threats include damaging gusty winds, frequent vivid lightning, large hail and torrential rainfall. Creeks and rivers could rise out of their banks closing roads and impacting homes and businesses with little or no notice.
Motorists are advised to drive with care, especially when approaching dips in roadways and underpasses. Do not drive through flooded spots on roadways, especially if you do not know how deep the water is.
If you come upon a flooded or closed road, do not drive through, turn around; it is better to avoid the stretch of roadway than to become stranded in the potentially deep water. Turn around, don't drown.
