Flash flooding in metro Atlanta impacts homes, roads

Crews were sent to a Cobb County neighborhood to rescue residents.

ATLANTA — Metro Atlanta saw flash flooding Tuesday evening as rain moved across the area. Flash flood warnings were issued for portions of DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett and Cobb counties.

Drivers should avoid driving through flooded roads. 

Here's a look at some of the impacts across the area.

Homes impacted in Cobb County 

The Cobb County Emergency Management Agency said it received reports of several homes being affected as the area is under a flash flood warning. 

11Alive went to Coopers Creek Circle and saw crews with Cobb County Fire rescuing people with boats who were trapped in their homes. 11Alive's Cody Alcorn was told that everyone was evacuated and safe.

The American Red Cross is now responding. In total, 19 people were rescued and 15 people need assistance, according to Cobb County Fire and Rescue.

Families said the flooding happened so fast. Water is now starting to recede.

I-285 flash floods

Interstate 285 east at the Georgia 400 exit is shut down on Tuesday evening after heavy rains brought flash flooding.

As of now, the Georgia Department of Transportation's website lists 9 p.m. as the estimated time for the interstate to reopen. Atlanta Fulton County Emergency Management said they have had several reports of cars stalled in the water on I-285 near Georgia 400.


Flash flooding reported in Dunwoody

The City of Dunwoody shared on X that officials are seeing some flooded roadways. It shared a picture saying crews would check out the drains along Old Spring House Lane to make sure they are filled with debris or blocked. 

City officials also said there was a large tree down on North Peachtree Road. 

Tree falls on house in Atlanta

Atlanta Fire Rescue said units responded to North Avenue Tuesday evening after a tree fell on a home. Crews said a person who was in a wheelchair was inside. They were able to safely remove him.
