ATLANTA — A winter storm is bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain to Georgia during Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend and it's affecting travel.
Saturday travel plans were plagued with delays as around 145 flights did not take off as scheduled at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.
Around Noon on Sunday, the website showed 222 outgoing flights were canceled so far and 121 incoming flights were canceled. Several dozen have been delayed.
Flight cancellations come as several northern Georgia counties are under a Winter Storm Warning in Georgia. The rest of the region, Atlanta and several surrounding metro counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory. In these locations, a coating up to 2 inches of snow will be possible with up to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation, according to 11Alive StormTrackers.
Hartsfield-Jackson officials said all of the airport's facilities are prepped for snow and ice removal. Officials said the airport will monitor the winter weather threat between Saturday evening and Monday morning and have implemented 12-hour shifts for its staff to address any issues as they arise.
On Sunday, they said things were going smooth with all runways open, cleared roads into the airport and less than 15 minute wait times at security check points.
For those with travel plans set during the potentially inclement weather, airport leaders advised passengers arrive at least two hours ahead of their flight.
"In the event that airlines have cancelations and/or delays, we strongly encourage passengers to check with their airlines for the most up-to-date flight information and monitor the airport’s social media channels," Hartsfield-Jackson said in a news release.
