Flash flood warning for Atlanta, Cobb, DeKalb, Gwinnett lifted

The warning was scheduled to last until 8:30 p.m., but was lifted shortly after 5 p.m.

ATLANTA — UPDATE: The flash flood warning for metro Atlanta was lifted just after 5 p.m.

UPDATE: A flash flood warning has now been issued for parts of Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett and DeKalb counties until 8:30 p.m. tonight.

That includes Atlanta and other cities such as Smyrna, Mableton, Decatur and Snellville.

It follows on a flood watch issued earlier today for much of the area.

A flood watch was issued Wednesday afternoon for Atlanta, north Fulton, Gwinnett County, Clayton County and elsewhere in the region.

The flood watch will remain in effect until 8 p.m. on Friday night.

Other areas in the greater Atlanta viewing area under the watch include: Rockdale, Newton, Greene, Henry, Butts, Jasper, Putnam, Morgan, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Forsyth, Hall, Banks, Jackson, Madison, Barrow, Clarke, Oconee, Walton, Oglethorpe.

According to the 11Alive StormTrackers, we could see scattered showers and thunderstorms on and off on Wednesday, then high rain chances will continue for Thursday before the rain chances are lower on Friday.

The NWS flood watch notice stated, "Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers,  creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.  Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur  in poor drainage and urban areas."

"A Flood Watch is in effect until Friday at 8PM EDT. 2-4" have already fallen in some areas with an additional 1.5-2.5" expected, however localized areas could see as much as 5"-7".  Continue to monitor forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings," the National Weather Service Atlanta account tweeted.

The flood watch was issued around 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, and will extend into much of central Georgia and parts of south Georgia as well.
