ATLANTA — The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season doesn't begin until June 1, but Colorado State University released its first forecast on Thursday.
Colorado State University, one of the leading universities in tropical forecasting, is expecting an above-average season with 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes.
The average numbers for hurricane season are 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.
Researchers at CSU cite lower wind shear from a transition from El Nino to La Nina and record warm sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Atlantic as contributing to their above-average forecast.
Researchers also say the forecast released for early April comes with above-normal confidence due to the setup of weather patterns and sea surface temperatures.
