GDOT begins brining, crews on standby with winter weather expected to move through north Georgia overnight

Some frozen precipitation is possible as far south as Dawson County.

ATLANTA — As the threat of winter weather increases across the northern end of the state, the Georgia Department of Transportation said it is ramping up preparations to keep drivers safe.

Natalie Dale with GDOT told 11Alive that crews will be focused in the northeastern and northwestern parts of the state that have higher elevations. Brining is already underway, she said, with plow teams on standby Thursday night into Friday morning.

"We'll be out there working, plow teams will be working overnight," she said.

An expected 2 to 3 inches of snow is expected in some of the northern counties, with the highest elevations poised to see 4 inches. Some frozen precipitation is possible as far south as Dawson County.

No snow is expected in the metro Atlanta, where it'll most likely be just a cold rain.

While Dale said she expects crews to hit all of the trouble spots, she said it's still important for drivers to stay off the roads if it's not necessary to drive.

"We don't want you to be the one that finds a hazardous road condition," she said. "We want to find it. We want to deal with it."

For people who have to perform essential travel, "we of course ask you to use extreme caution," Dale said.

If someone does happen to come across a slick spot, Dale said they can report it to GDOT by calling 511. Once the roads are safe, though, Dale said GDOT will give the all "clear."

Meanwhile, as preps get underway, she asked for everyone to "give our crews space to do what they need to do."
