ATLANTA — It's an elusive dream in a state like Georgia: a white Christmas.
We know it will be cold this week around Atlanta and precipitation could be due on Monday -- any chance those two factors could actually combine for snowy conditions in the Peach State for Christmas Day?
Well, the National Weather Service on Tuesday posted a handy map that shows what the odds are looking like throughout the state.
If you look closely, you'll notice in north Georgia it's... not good. And in south Georgia... even worse. (And even further south in Florida? "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here," the NWS map says.)
So don't hold out too much hope for that fairytale white Christmas, at least this year. But there's always next year!
When was the last time Atlanta had a white Christmas?
According to the National Weather Service, the last time Atlanta had a white Christmas was when 1.3 inches fell in 2010.
"Even though some Christmases have been very cold in our area, snow on Christmas is extremely unusual. A trace of snow has only been recorded a handful of times at climate reporting sites in Georgia since record keeping began," an NWS page on Christmas climatology in north and central Georgia notes.
There was also an ice storm in 1962 that particularly impacted Gainesville as well, if you're wondering.
