Cats, dogs, and horses: During Dorian, First Lady Kemp informs evacuees of the options they have

The first lady tweeted a link Wednesday letting people know about some of the resources available.

ATLANTA — As Hurricane Dorian moves along near the coast, close to 4,000 people have checked into Georgia's State Parks.

Even more people are expected to arrive in the state from the Carolinas and remain until the storm passes.

State parks are free to people and their pets.

Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black said the state is helping shelter 300 horses and about 200 dogs and cats as of Wednesday.

The governor's office and Georgia First Lady Marty Kemp have been working to make sure people know the resources they have available to them.

She's traveled to Brunswick and Savannah to meet with emergency responders and spread the word about safety guidelines. She’s been by Gov. Brian Kemp's side for all the briefings.

“We work as a team, as a family [and] it’s really important that people know we are there to support them," she said.

The Kemps have traveled around the state urging people to take precautions and evacuate in situations deemed necessary. Mrs.Kemp said she wants Georgians to know that they are here for support.

“We want to go down there and thank them and let them know that we have their back," she added.

The first lady tweeted a link Wednesday letting people know about some of the resources available.

"There are shelters around our state willing and ready to help make sure pets are taken care of during the storm," she said.

“It’s so critical that we don’t leave them behind because they cannot fend for themselves," she told 11Alive's Cheryl Preheim.

“There are people who are there helping out, they aren’t sleeping much and they are spending time away from their own families to make sure Georgians are safe," she said.

The state works with private residents, as well, who help take in horses during these situations. They ask the owners to bring the paperwork and identification needed so pets and owners are able to be quickly reunited after the storm passes.

Kemp's Twitter page is filled with information about locations available to shelter animals.

There are also pet friendly hotels available around the state.
