Hurricane outlook for 2019 released

The outlook does not take into consideration whether the storms will be land-falling or remain out over the open ocean.

Colorado State University is has released its prediction for hurricane season this year, calling for it to be less active than last year.

They’re calling for total named storms to be slightly above average, but for stronger storms like major hurricanes to be slightly below average.

Because of a weak El Nino, as well as some other factors, researchers are predicting a less active season than 2018. Their outlook does not take into consideration whether the storms will be land-falling or remain out over the open ocean.

NOAA and the National Hurricane Center will release their official forecast on May 23. The NHC believes that getting the latest guidance during the month of May gives them a more accurate forecast.

In past seasons they averaged 70 percent accuracy when predicting hurricane activity for the season ahead.
