Sandy Springs residents near Nancy Creek advised to evacuate

A notice to evacuate came in a little after 2:30 a.m.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Residents of Sandy Springs near Nancy Creek were advised early Friday morning to evacuate due to flooding from Helene.

Fulton County's Emergency Management Agency posted on social media that an alert was sent to residents around 2:30 a.m. and included a map of the evacuation zone, which includes many neighborhoods off Windsor Parkway on either side of GA-400.

The city of Sandy Springs website said these residents are advised to go to "higher ground due to extreme flooding."

The city site said the bridge near Windsor Parkway over Nancy Creek is closed.

A detour is in place from Peachtree Dunwoody Road to Peachtree Road to Wieuca Road to Roswell Road; or Peachtree Dunwoody Road north to Glenridge Connector.

Helene was due to arrive in the metro Atlanta area sometime in the 5 a.m. hour Friday morning as a tropical storm moving north up the eastern portion of the state.

Helene strengthened to a "dangerous" category 4 hurricane just after 6:30 p.m., Thursday before it made landfall late Thursday around 11:30 p.m. near Apalachicola, along Florida's Big Bend region. It crossed into Georgia still as a hurricane before being downgraded to a tropical storm Friday, after the 5 a.m. advisory.
