Tropical Storm Nadine forms in the Caribbean

Impacts to Belize this weekend.

BELIZE CITY, Belize — Less than 10 days removed from Milton's destructive landfall in Florida, Tropical Storm Nadine formed in the Caribbean overnight Friday.

Nadine is moving west at 8 mph. An increase in forward speed is expected before it moves inland along the coast of Belize. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Some additional slight strengthening is possible before Nadine makes landfall later today. Tropical Storm Nadine will weaken as it moves westward over land.

Widespread 4 to 8-inch rainfall amounts are expected across northern Belize, northern Guatemala, and the southern states of Mexico from Quintana Roo westward to Veracruz. Isolated areas of amounts exceeding 12 inches are also possible through late Tuesday.

Minor coastal flooding is possible in areas of onshore winds near and to the north of where the center moves inland.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Belize City, Belize, to Tulum, Mexico. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles north of the center of circulation.

How many hurricanes have there been this season?

The 2024 Hurricane Season will leave its mark forever. Nadine is the 14th named storm in the Atlantic Basin. Nine of those became hurricanes. Four of the nine hurricanes reached major hurricane status, a Category 3 or higher. This included Helene, which was the U.S.'s deadliest hurricane since Katrina. Thirty-three Georgians lost their lives in Helene, and nearly 100 lost their lives in North Carolina.

Although more than a month removed from the season's "peak," there is still a way to go. Hurricane Season officially ends on November 30, in about six weeks.
