Nonprofit that helped Apalachee High kids assisting Helene victims in Georgia

In a time of need, one nonprofit continues to answer the call.
A nonprofit in Winder is working to help Apalachee High students as they return to the classroom following the tragic shooting that killed four people on Sept. 4.

WINDER, Ga. β€” In times of need, one nonprofit is helping countless people recover when they require it most.

Adventure Bags, a nonprofit based out of Winder, helps kids in crisis by working with agencies across the state to donate backpacks. The nonprofit reported since 2011, it has served more than 54,000 kids in Georgia.

The organization worked to help students at Apalachee High School in the aftermath of a deadly school shooting, as 11Alive's Molly Oak reported that Adventure Bags packed up 2,000 bags on Sept. 20 to help students at the Barrow County high school.

The organization fills backpacks with hygiene and comfort items for kids of all ages across the state. However, when the "crisis hit home," as the executive director put it, those with Adventure Bags knew they had to help.

Now, in the wake of tragedy following a deadly hurricane that carved a path through south and central Georgia, the same nonprofit is lending a backpack strap to storm victims in certain parts of the state.

Adventure Bags announced it was quickly transitioning from its Apalachee Comfort Bag Project to its Disaster Relief Efforts by sending 480 bags to children in the Augusta and Alma areas. They will then dispatch 100 bags to the Waynesboro area, and they are still awaiting word to hopefully send more bags to the Jenkins and Screvens area.

"Our goal is to help children affected by Hurricane Helene (and hope they) will feel a sense of security and comfort through our Adventure Bags," the organization said in a statement to 11Alive.

Adventure Bags is partnering with Georgia Baptist Mission Board, City of Refuge Athens, and Waynesboro Church of God to help distribute the bags to the children in need.
