Live Blog: Winter Weather Advisory no longer in effect for parts of north Georgia

State government offices in 35 counties will be closed for all non-essential personnel on Tuesday.

ATLANTA — A strong cold front will be moving through the southeastern states on Tuesday, bringing with it, some of the coldest weather of the season. 

The Winter Weather Advisory for Atlanta ended around 12:00 p.m. Tuesday. Many schools and city government offices were closed in lieu of the potential weather.

12:00 pm | Winter Advisory has ended for Atlanta and north Georgia. 

11:10 am | NO SNOW FOR US! Precipitation is moving out as the cold air lags behind.

9:04 am | Atlanta announces that crews have treated roads and bridges to prepare for the cold temperatures.

9:00 am | Snow begins to fall in Blairsville, Ga.

5:50 am | Roads around metro Atlanta remain quiet as drivers heed the warning to stay off the roads.

4:30 am | Winter Weather Advisory issued for most parts of north Georgia. Up to 1 inch of possible snow due to warmer temperatures.

10:50 pm | Trucks are out treating the roads ahead of winter weather.

8:37 pm | Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMCs) in Georgia are monitoring weather conditions and preparing to respond to any power outages caused by Winter Storm Jayden. EMC outage figures are updated every 15 minutes and can be found on Georgia EMC’s web site at https://georgiaemc.com/page/outages.

7:00 pm | Delta Airl Lines said Monday it will proactively cancel approximately 170 mainline and Delta Connection flights for Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ahead of the possible winter storm.

6:47 pm | DeKalb County said that homeless individuals and families in need of cold weather overnight shelter can be referred to the following facilities:

* Salvation Army Red Shield, 400 Luckie St. NW Atlanta, GA 30313. For a referral, contact (770) 905-2396 by 5 p.m.

* First Tucker United Methodist Church, 4315 Church Street, Tucker. The shelter will be open Tuesday through Thursday. Call 678-325-4041 or 404-291-3429 to confirm opening.

Additionally, a limited number of complimentary round-trip MARTA cards will be available for transport to warming stations or cold weather shelters. The cards can be picked up at 6 p.m. at A Home for Everyone in DeKalb, 105 Sycamore Street, Decatur, GA 30030. Call (904) 825-8035 for more information.

6:13 pm | Georgia Department of Transportation officials advised drivers to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as the winter weather makes its way into north Georgia.

Gov. Brian Kemp said that public transportation will still be available for those who are visiting Atlanta for the Super Bowl.

4:55 pm | The City of Atlanta announced Monday afternoon that they are opening two emergency warming centers in anticipation of the frigid temperatures over the next few days. 

The city's warming centers are located at:

  • Old Adamsville Recreation Center
    3404 Delmar Lane, NW
    Atlanta, GA 30331
  • Central Park Recreation Center
    400 Merrits Avenue, NE
    Atlanta, GA 30308

The centers will open Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. and will remain open until Thursday morning, January 31.

4:30 pm | City of Doraville officials say the Doraville City Hall and city offices will be closed on Tuesday due to the pending inclement weather.

4:25 pm | City of Atlanta officials said they have started pre-treating main roadways and bridges with a brine solution.

During the overnight hours Monday, they plan to transition to a salt treatment, which will continue through the end of the weather event.

4:15 pm | Georgia Military College will close its Fairburn, Fayetteville and Stone Mountain campuses on Tuesday. GMC Zebulon will remain open on Tuesday for morning classes, but all night classes will be cancelled.

4 pm | Zoo Atlanta and the DeKalb County Courthouse have both announced they will be closed on Tuesday.

2:25 pm | The City of East Point announced their administrative offices will be closed on Tuesday. 

The city will have warming stations available for East Point residents at Fire Station #2 at 3171 Norman Berry Drive and at Fire Station #3 at 3800 North Commerce Drive.

2 pm | Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State University and Emory University have joined the list of colleges closing for Tuesday. 

Georgia Tech says the sold-out home men's basketball game scheduled for Tuesday night against North Carolina will still be played as scheduled.

1:45 pm |  The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for up to one and a half inches of snow mainly along and north of a line from Carrollton to Marietta to Canton.

This advisory covers Bartow, Cherokee, Forsyth, Hall, Polk, Paulding, Cobb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Carroll, Douglas, DeKalb, Heard, Coweta, Fayette and Clayton counties and runs from 3 am to 7 pm Tuesday. 

Lesser amounts of snow are likely along the Interstate 85 corridor.

Any moisture remaining on the roads, especially in sheltered or protected areas will likely refreeze, increasing the potential for black ice development.

1:44 pm | The Winter Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for parts of far north Georgia, primarily in Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Chattooga, Gordon, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White and Floyd counties. 

Between 1 and 3 inches of snow is expected in those counties with locally higher amounts possible on ridge tops. Any moisture remaining on roadways, especially in protected or sheltered areas will refreeze, leading to slick spots and black ice development overnight. 

Travel may be very difficult across the region. Motorists should take extra care across the area.

1:15 pm | Union City government offices said they will be closed on Tuesday.

1:05 pm | 11Alive's Kaitlyn Ross reports that the Super Bowl Volunteer offices will be closed on Tuesday due to the winter weather. 

1:02 pm | City of South Fulton announced their government offices will be closed Tuesday

12:52 pm | Georgia State University is closed on Tuesday

12:16 pm | North Georgia Health District, based in Dalton and serving clients in Cherokee, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens and Whitfield counties will be closed Tuesday.

12:15 pm | State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA) to close I-75 South Metro Express Lanes in both directions at 11 am Tuesday. The Northwest Corridor Express Lanes on I-75 and I-575 will close in both directions at 11:30 am on Tuesday out of an abundance of caution.

12:00 pm | Cobb County Government offices are closed for Tuesday.

11:00 am | Fulton County Government offices said they are closing for Tuesday 

10:45 am | Chattahoochee Tech - All Campuses closed Tuesday

10:30 am | In a joint news conference Monday morning, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Tuesday closings of city offices as well as state offices in 35 counties directly affected by the pending winter weather.  

The counties included under the governor's order are: Bartow, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Habersham, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Lumpkin, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Rabun, Towns, Union, Walker, Whitfield and White. 

Both officials said they are waiting to see if the same thing may need to happen for Wednesday. 

Many school systems followed suit, announcing school closings for Tuesday.
