Strong storms cause damage, flooding in metro Atlanta

11Alive is tracking the latest reports of damage.

ATLANTA — Strong storms quickly moved through metro Atlanta early Tuesday morning. 

Although the storms are beginning to fizzle out of the area, many roadways were left with flooding and downed trees made a busy morning commute even more difficult.

Trees down

  • In Sandy Springs, 11Alive StormTrackers are seeing reports of a downed tree on Twin Branch Road. Photos sent in from an 11Alive viewer also show downed powerlines in the neighborhood.
  • Rotten tree across a roadway on Spring Valley Parkway. Fire officials said that no homes were damaged.
  • Tree leaning on a power line in College Park on Stonewall Tell Road
  • Everett Mountain Road in Rockmart
  • Berry Road in Cedartown
  • Springdale Road in Rockmart
  • Both lanes of Northside Drive blocked near Collier Road near Buckhead

House struck by lightning

On Woodland Avenue, a house caught fire after possibly being struck by a lightning strike. One person and a dog were inside; however, we've learned both made it out safely. In the end, firefighters said 25% of the home was damaged, even as the fire was able to be contained in five minutes.

Person killed by falling tree

Details are limited, but police said that the tree fell on a vehicle at the Intersection of Highway 54/Fayetteville Road and Jenni Lane during a wreck just before 9:50 a.m.

Clayton County Police later released in an update that as the driver of a white four-door sedan was traveling eastbound on the highway a tree fell and hit the car killing the driver on impact. No one else was in the car, according to police.
