Moderate drought returns to part of the region with Drought Monitor update on Thursday

Abnormally dry conditions first appeared back on the Drought Monitor a couple of weeks ago and now moderate drought has returned.

ATLANTA — It has been a dry month across north Georgia with only three quarters of an inch of rain occurring through the first two-thirds of the month. This has put us nearly two inches behind on rainfall for the month.

It also hasn't just been dry for June, but May finished behind average on rainfall too. May finished up more than half an inch behind on rainfall compared to the average.

Thankfully, we are still ahead on rain for the year due to a very wet March and April.

We first had abnormally dry conditions appear a few weeks ago for the region, but due to how dry it has been, the area of abnormally dry has grown and the spot where it was originally centered has turned into moderate drought.

This next week isn't expected to bring much rainfall, we only have a few 20%-30% chances for rain in the seven day forecast as we move from the end of the weekend and through the middle of next week.

These rain chances are expected to produce less than half an inch of rain across the region, which is not enough to help push back drought conditions and likely means drought will worsen.

With hot conditions and lower rain chances this next week, be sure you are keeping your yard watered as these drier conditions could kill some vegetation.
