ATLANTA — Look up to the skies tonight in Georgia and you will see a phenomenon that is rarely ever seen this far south -- the northern lights!
That's because there is a G5 Geomagnetic Storm Observation across the United States on Friday, the first time it has ever happened here since 2003. Also known formally as the aurora borealis, the northern lights are most typically found in high-latitude regions like the Arctic and Antarctic.
This solar storm exceeded the original forecasts from the Space Weather Prediction Center and the northern lights have been spotted in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina.
If you look north in the sky and see faint hues of red, purple, pink, or green -- that is the northern lights.
Those in the state are sending in their magnificent photos of the northern lights in the clear, starry skies in Georgia. Keep sending in your photos on the 11Alive Stormtrackers Facebook page or by using the "Near Me" section on the 11Alive app.
