Parts of north Georgia, metro Atlanta under thunderstorm advisories | Weather blog

ATLANTA — In the midst of a heat wave descending on north Georgia, some counties have seen severe thunderstorm warnings on Wednesday.

A level 2 risk for severe storms spans much of Georgia, with damaging winds and small hail a possibility. The severe weather comes amid record-breaking hot temperatures, marking Atlanta's hottest day of the year. Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings are in effect until 8 p.m. This is on top of severe thunderstorm warnings.

10:15 p.m. | A downed tree broke through a highway barrier Wednesday night along Highway 74 by Kelly Drive. The tree is between highway guardrails and sound barriers, just north of Acorn Street in Fayette County.

9:50 p.m. | Haralson, Paulding, Carroll, and Polk counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10:30 p.m.

9:34 p.m. | Habersham and Rabun counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10:15 p.m.

9:32 p.m. | Haralson and Polk counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 10:15 p.m.

9:01 p.m. | The NWS has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Carroll, Paulding, Haralson, Heard and Polk counties. It is set to expire at 9:45 p.m., forecasters said.

8:53 p.m. | Storms moved through metro Atlanta Wednesday night. 11Alive's photojournalist Chris Cole caught the storm systems on dash camera video.

8:11 p.m. | Powerful winds brought down a large tree in Peachtree City Wednesday night. Branches from the tree were resting on the roof of a nearby home. Caution tape roped off the downed tree.

8:10 p.m. | Severe thunderstorm warnings have been extended until 8:45 p.m. for Coweta, Troup, Meriwether, Pike, Upson and Chambers counties.

7:48 p.m. | Rain is moving through parts of metro Atlanta. See if a storm is headed your way using the live radar below.

7:42 p.m. | Peachtree City neighbors report hail falling in the area. Fayette County is under a severe thunderstorm warning, according to the NWS.

7:40 p.m. | Pea-sized hail spotted by Lake Sinclair amid strong winds and lightning, 11Alive Stormtracker Terry Middendorf Rhodes said.

7:37 p.m. | The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Fayette, Spalding, Coweta, Pike, Butts, Meriwether and Monroe counties until 8:15 p.m.

7:32 p.m. | Meriwether and Troup counties are under a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:15 p.m.

7:27 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Carroll, Heard and Coweta counties until 8 p.m.

7:01 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Coweta, Jones, Monroe, Jasper, Spalding, Upson, Meriwether, Pike, Talbout, Troup, Fulton, Caroll, Douglas, Butts counties.
