Photos, video show damage as communities clean up behind Gilmer County tornado

11Alive SkyTracker returned to Ellijay on Friday morning to examine the damage further as the communities worked on cleanup.

ELLIJAY, Ga. — Videos and photos give better insight into the damaging storms that passed through north Georgia during this week.

The National Weather Service confirmed Friday a tornado moved through a portion of Gilmer County Wednesday night, giving it a preliminary EF-1 rating. Surveyors are still working to assess damage in other areas. 

11Alive SkyTracker returned to Ellijay on Friday morning to examine the damage further as the communities worked on cleanup.

Take a look at what we found below. Portions of buildings were ripped apart, leaving debris scattered and people searching through items. 

11Alive crews also went on the ground Friday. They saw piles of debris and toppled over trees on roads. Clean up crews were spotted with trucks in the area working.

11Alive's Bobeth Yates went to a home off of Old Highway 5 South, where she found more devastation. The sidings of homes were plastered on the ground. Part of the roof was also missing.

Here are additional photos of the damage, which show more of the destruction, including RVs tipped over on the ground, downed structures and powerlines.
