RIVERDALE, Ga. — A preliminary survey of damage by the National Weather Service (NWS) appears to indicate a tornado may have passed over Riverdale, Tuesday afternoon.
It was around 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, when the NWS issued a tornado warning for parts of DeKalb, Henry and Rockdale counties as a line of storms moved through the area. Also warned was Clayton County, where Riverdale is located.
One of the places that received reports of damage was Laurel Park Apartments off Ga. Highway 85 in northern Riverdale. That's where 11Alive StormTracker Meteorologist Samantha Mohr found Georgia Power crews working to remove several trees and power lines down on multiple units of the apartment.
Mohr spoke with David Nadler with the National Weather Service who said the damage appeared to be consistent with what would be caused by a possible tornado.
"Based on what we saw on the radar that triggered the tornado warning - we did have good circulation with it, so we think there might have been a possible tornado in this area," Nadler explained. "Right now, we're just looking at everything to pull it all together."
Nadler said it appeared the trees were perpendicular to the storm's motion indicating the possible tornado.
