FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. — The threat of possible wintry weather has multiple north Georgia school systems operating on a delay for Tuesday.
According to the Fannin County School District, all of its schools will operate on a two-hour delay. It is effective for Tuesday morning, Nov. 12. Chattooga, Walker and Dade Counties are also instituting two-hour delays.
The delayed start includes all bus routes, as well as the times that parents may drop off children at school on Tuesday morning. Schools will dismiss at regular time on Tuesday afternoon.
Because of the delay, school officials in Fannin County noted that breakfast will not be served.
"We will continue to monitor the conditions and take every precaution to insure the safety of our students," Walker County said on its schools website.
Though students do not have to report at the regularly-scheduled time, the district said all principals and 12-month personnel should report to work as close to normal time "as safely possible" on Tuesday.
According to the 11Alive StormTrackers, a strong cold front will move across the state early Tuesday morning. Widespread showers will accompany the front as it moves through the region.
Behind the front, temperatures are expected to plummet to below freezing overnight, with some wintry mix possible as the departing moisture and the arctic air overlap.
While the precipitation will come to a quick end through the mid-morning, very light accumulations from a trace up to perhaps a quarter-inch in the higher elevations of the North Georgia Mountains are possible. In addition, any lingering moisture on roadways throughout the region could create patchy slick spots and black ice as temperatures fall to freezing. Caution is advised, especially in higher elevations.
