DUNWOODY, Ga. — Sunday marks the 25th anniversary of the deadly Dunwoody tornado that ripped through the metro Atlanta town that resulted in millions of dollars in damage.
The tornado touched down during the week of spring break on April 9, 1998 that really hammered numerous neighborhoods, including killing one person during the havoc.
Over 1,500 families were displaced along with 750 acres of land destroyed totaling $150 million in destruction.
11Alive's Jeff Hullinger recalls living not too far from Dunwoody when the tornado struck the area. He remembers running to the basement with his family in a scary scene with violent weather.
To this day, those who drive down where Holcomb and Spalding come together you can still see sawed off trees that are still there from 1998. It happened at a time, too, when there weren't seemingly as many tornadoes in the metro Atlanta area.
Recent tornadoes, even those that have turned deadly, have struck the metro Atlanta region causing widespread damage and even tragically killing several people.
To view footage of damage from the 1998 tornado, 11Alive revisited the devastating anniversary of the day it happened.
