ATLANTA — A Severe Thunderstorm watch is in effect including Atlanta and for areas west of Atlanta until 3 am. The counties included in the watch area Bartow, Butts, Carroll, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, Dade, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Floyd, Fulton, Gordon, Haralson, Harris, Heard, Henry, Lamar, Meriwether, Paulding, Pike, Polk, Spalding, Troup, Upson and Walker. These areas have a better chance of seeing strong storms as a line of severe weather moves in from Alabama.
A strong cold front will be moving in late Thursday into early Friday and it has the potential to bring severe storms along with it.
THURSDAY NIGHT INTO MIDNIGHT
Storms will move in from Alabama right around 9:30 PM with our west Georgia counties being impacted first.
They can expect to see heavy rain strong destructive winds, large hail and frequent lightning we can’t rule out the chance for isolated tornadoes as the leading edge moves through.
OVERNIGHT
The line of storms is expected to sweep across north and central Georgia - including the Atlanta metropolitan area - overnight while most of us will be sleeping.
Residents are being urged by the National Weather Service out of Peachtree City to have their battery-operated weather radios ready to go and their phones fully charged, just in case they need to get to shelter quickly in the middle of the night.
FRIDAY MORNING COMMUTE
Some showers on the backside will likely still be moving through but all the severe weather threat should be over.
That being said, slick roads will still likely impact the commute.
