ATLANTA — It has been a chilly Friday afternoon across north Georgia as temperatures have only risen into the 40s and 50s.
For Friday night, the temperatures fall and a storm system set to bring heavy rain across the region moves in from the west.
This system has brought snow to portions of the Ozarks in Arkansas. While our mountains have the threat of wintry weather overnight, they won't get snow, but freezing rain is possible.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for far north Georgia from 11 p.m. Friday into 8 a.m. Saturday. This advisory is for Gilmer, Fannin, Dawson, Union, Lumpkin, Towns and White counties. In the higher elevations of these counties, mainly through spots through the Chattahoochee National Forest, there could be up to two-tenths of an inch of freezing rain. This could lead to some slick spots on roads until temperatures get above freezing in these higher elevations late Saturday morning.
Most models have very low accumulation expected, reflecting that the impacts will likely be lower compared to our neighbors in North Carolina, which is where totals could be much higher.
Expect the highest possibility for freezing rain in far north Georgia and heavy liquid rain in the Atlanta area to be around the early hours of the morning while most of us are sleeping.
We will also have strong wind gusts overnight, which is a bad combination with freezing rain. This could lead to some large limbs coming down in the higher elevations that get higher totals of freezing rain.
We are still expecting just rain with no wintry mix in metro Atlanta, but it will be breezy. All of the precipitation will move out by noon on Saturday, with drier and warmer conditions for the afternoon as temperatures rise into the 50s.
