Showers clearing out of metro Atlanta | Live updates

ATLANTA — There's a chance for thunderstorms as the rain becomes more widespread Friday afternoon. Some of the thunderstorms will drop some brief heavy rain, produce frequent lightning, and gusty winds. This weather is expected to stick around through the Fourth of July weekend.

5:25 p.m. | A special announcement from the weather service warns residents in Hart County of a thunderstom coming thier way. It is expected to clear the county around 6 p.m. 

5:05 p.m. | Here's an evening forecast from 11Alive Meteorologist and Stormtracker, Mellissa Ward, she also takes a look at the rest of the holiday weekend. 

Storms are settling down this evening, this weekend is expected to be hot and humid. 

4:42 p.m. | Jefferson Street in Newnan is closed due to flooding from the storms. Police also said there is heavy traffic in the following areas, Bullsboro Drive, Newnan Crossing Bypass, Newnan Crossing Boulevard East, Lower Fayetteville Road and Jefferson Street Extension. Please find an alternate route.

3:35 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Troup County. It expires at 4:15 p.m.

2:36 p.m. | Tree falls on I-85 south, covering most of the freeway

2:35 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Coweta County. It expires at 3:15 p.m.
