Dusting of snow falls in north Georgia, sleet reported around metro Atlanta

The wintery mix comes after Georgia experienced a week of wild weather.

ATLANTA — Folks in the north Georgia mountains are seeing a flurry of April snow on Saturday, while sleet has been reported as far south as the Atlanta metro.

Members of the 11Alive StormTrackers Facebook group (which you can join!) have posted photos and videos of the dusting up in the north Georgia mountains, from places like Hiawassee and Blairsville.

One StormTracker even reported flurries in Clarkesville.

Meanwhile, several reports have come in of sleet closer into the Atlanta metro, from cities including Kennesaw and Decatur.

The reports on Saturday follow on flurries being seen in the region late Friday, as as a freeze warning set in overnight for some counties in north Georgia. There was also a frost warning for the rest of the region, including around metro Atlanta.

11Alive StormTracker Meteorologist Melissa Nord says, "A weak disturbance and colder air aloft allowed for some light mixed showers this morning in north Georgia."

In the Atlanta metro, some ice pellets known as sleet and flurries were reported before light raindrops. These showers were brief and no impact is expected. In the north Georgia mountains, snow showers were seen across multiple counties. The chance of precipitation and cloud cover should clear out later this afternoon.

With skies clearing tonight, temperatures will be very cold again. Northeast Georgia will be under a Freeze Warning where temperatures could drop down below 32 degrees. Temperatures around the Atlanta metro will be in the mid to upper 30s to start Sunday.

The wintery mix comes after Georgia experienced a week of wild weather. The week's mild start also included two days of tornado activity, with at least four twisters recorded in the state.
