More than 4 inches of rain could fall in parts of the Atlanta area this week

Two storm systems deliver a 1-2 punch of heavy rainfall to north Georgia.

ATLANTA — Two storm systems deliver a 1-2 punch of widespread rainfall to the Atlanta area and north Georgia this week. In total, parts of our area could see rain totals of upwards of four inches between now and the end of Saturday.

The first storm system will impact the area Tuesday into early Wednesday, delivering one to 1.5 inches of rain.

We'll catch a brief break with dry weather all day Thursday. But Friday into Saturday, the second storm system moves in with another two to three inches of rain.

Although the rain isn't all delivered in a single calendar day, we'll have to watch for flooding issues as each storm system works through the area. Creek, stream, and river levels will run high and some could enter flood stage.

Models differ a little bit on where the bullseye of rain will end up over the next seven days. The American model shows the highest rain totals along and south of I-20, with many 4"+ amounts. It shows 2"+ rain totals across far north Georgia. The European model has that bullseye over the entire Atlanta metro with widespread 4" to isolated 5" totals.
