ATLANTA — As repeated rounds of rain enter north Georgia through the weekend, flooding concerns continue to grow.
The National Weather Service extended the Flood Watch until 7 p.m. Saturday. It has also expanded the area within the flood watch to encompass most of north Georgia. This will include the Atlanta metro area, the north Georgia mountains, east of the metro near Athens, and west of the city to the state line.
Through Saturday, one to three inches of rain is expected. Locally, rain totals could exceed five inches. The highest rain totals may fall across far north Georgia, including the higher elevations of the north Georgia mountains.
Runoff from excessive rainfall could lead to water rises in creeks, streams, and rivers. In addition, low-lying areas on roadways could flood during heavy rainfall. Remember never to drive on a flooded roadway!
The 11Alive StormTrackers are tracking the heaviest rain threat for the area during the day on Saturday.
This has already been a very wet month for Georgia, and we are quickly digging out of our drought. Earlier this month, torrential rains created flooding across many counties across the area.
Through Monday, Atlanta has picked up 4.73" of rain this month. This is a surplus to date of 1.5".
