ATLANTA — Yes, there's that other March Madness thing on TV, but people in Atlanta also think March has been mad outside of basketball. We've had rain the last four Fridays in a row. And this Friday will make a streak of five.
Rain moves in late morning to early afternoon, and a widespread rain takes us through the rest of the day. Although we do not expect severe weather, pockets of moderate to heavy rain are likely at times. We won't completely rule out a rumble of thunder, either. In total, around 1 inch of rain is coming to north Georgia.
The timing of this includes rain chances lingering into the start of the weekend, with more scattered showers possible on Saturday.
Atlanta has had a wet March, and we still have about 1/3 left of it. To date, we've picked up just shy of 7 inches of rain. Included in that have been 4 separate 1"+ rain days! And the odds have not been in our favor with Fridays.
Timing of Friday's Rain
This time around, the rain arrives around the middle of the day and lasts into Friday night.
Friday Morning
The morning commute starts mostly dry. Temps will be in the mid-50s with cloudy skies. An isolated shower is possible. The bulk of the initial rain holds off until after the commute ends altogether
Friday Late Morning
As the commute ends, rain showers begin to move in from central Georgia and push further north.
Friday Early Afternoon
Fairly widespread rain continues to creep further northward, impacting all of metro Atlanta by the middle of the afternoon.
Friday Evening commute
Fairly widespread rain works across the area. It will be cool and gusty, with some gusts 25 to 30 mph. Temps hold in the 50s. At times, the rain could be moderate to heavy, especially in the east of Atlanta.
Friday Night Plans
Widespread rain continues across the area. At times, the rain could be moderate to heavy, especially east of Atlanta. Rain may become less widespread after midnight.
Friday Overnight
Rain continues pivoting through the area. The heaviest rain will start to shift east.
Saturday Morning
The widespread rain is over. Scattered showers will still work through the area, but they'll be lighter in nature.
Saturday Afternoon
The showers taper off altogether. Some hints of sunshine return. It will be windy at times, with gusts around 30 mph possible. Temps rebound into the mid-60s.
Model Rain Amounts
Around 1 inch of rain is expected. Areas east of Atlanta could get more than that, closer to 1.5". Areas west of the city may end up with a little less. Central Georgia will have higher rain amounts as a whole.
Is the Whole Weekend A Washout?
Not at all! Scattered showers are possible on Saturday, especially in the morning. As we dry out, it stays breezy to gusty. Sunday looks dry with sunshine.
