ATLANTA — A summer-like pattern takes hold across the Peach State for the unofficial start of summer. Throughout the Memorial Day weekend, highs will run more typical of July 4th, and daily storms will be a factor that we'll be dodging for outdoor plans.
Across the North Georgia and Atlanta areas, we will have highs in the upper 80s to around 90 each afternoon with sultry, muggy mornings in the upper 60s. We average highs in the low 80s this time of year, so the summer-like heat is well above-average.
This chance for a few pop-up daily storms will also impact area lakes. Lake Lanier currently sits at 1,071.66 feet, 0.66 feet above full pool. Winds each day should be southwesterly at 5 to 10 knots.
SUNDAY:
Most areas will be dry Sunday. We are holding on to just a 20% chance for a shower Sunday afternoon with our heat and humidity. That could bubble up a pop up shower. Temperatures make it up to 90° for the afternoon.
STORMS POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING:
We are tracking a line of storms that will move into NW Georgia in the middle of the night toward Monday morning. They will push into NW GA between 3am-5am.
Those storms push through the metro area between 6am-9am.
That line will have some pockets of heavy rain, and some strong winds possible. The Storm Prediction Center has places much of metro Atlanta and areas west in a level 2 of 5 risk for severe storms. Areas east of Atlanta area in a level 1 risk.
Conditions improve late morning into early afternoon. Later in the afternoon, we will still have a chance for a few scattered showers. They will be more of the hit and miss variety.
