ATLANTA — Thursday across north Georgia will feel more like early May than the middle of March. Temperatures will soar around 15 degrees above average to the upper 70s. A few spots could be around 80 degrees!
Our average high right now is only 65°. That average high climbs to 70 degrees around April 1st. Then by May 10th, our average high climbs to 80 degrees.
Even though our 'average high' is nowhere near 80 degrees right now, it doesn't mean it's not normal for us to see a day or two in the 80s mid-March. In fact, our average first 80° day of the year is March 21, based on Atlanta's climate average from 1991-2020.
The earliest ever 80°-day for hitting that threshold was Feb. 7, 2019. The latest ever? Not until May 5, 1933!
The above-average warm weather will stick around through the weekend with more highs in the 60s and 70s. Early next week, all signs point to a cold snap. Highs will fall into the 50s to low 60s, with some mornings in the 30s to ring in the 'spring equinox.'
Spring officially arrives on Tuesday, March 19.
