'Dangerous' flash flooding, downed trees impact metro Atlanta after severe storms

Tracking severe storms as they move through north Georgia and metro Atlanta.

ATLANTA — Another round of severe storms moved through north Georgia and metro Atlanta Friday afternoon and evening a day after strong thunderstorms and straight-line winds caused structural damage and downed trees.

The National Weather Service has issued an emergency alert for a flash flood warning for the metro Atlanta area until 1 a.m. They said the flooding is a "dangerous and life-threatening situation." They recommend people in the area do not travel unless you are in an area that is flooding.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for all of north Georgia and metro Atlanta until 1 a.m.

10 p.m.  | 11Alive's Chief Meteorologist provided an update saying the storms are tapering off and heading to the east. However, the flash flood warning will still be in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday.

8:58 p.m. | Fulton County Jail officials said the power went out due to the storms but it has its backup generator running. Officials with Atlanta Gas Light said it responded to the jail after a tree fell on a propane tank-- causing a leak. Crews said they helped until the leak was contained at the jail. 

8:07 p.m. | 11Alive's Cody Alcorn is on 7th Street in Midtown where large trees have fallen downing power lines and causing other damage.

7:55 p.m. | A traffic camera along Georgia 400 shows almost no visibility due to heavy downpours.

7:16 p.m. | The lack of visibility on the roads can be seen just driving through the 11Alive parking lot.

7:14 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Putnam, Greene, Morgan and Taliaferro counties until 7:30 p.m.

7:13 p.m. | 11Alive Meteorologist Melissa Nord reports that some areas in metro Atlanta have already accumulated over 3 inches of rain.

7:07 p.m. | Photos show standing water along Northside Drive in Atlanta and 6th Street in Midtown Atlanta.

7:05 p.m. | An 11Alive viewer sent in video of flooding on 6th street in Midtown Atlanta has standing water begins to pile up.

6:54 p.m. | The National Weather Service has issued an emergency alert for a flash flood warning for the metro Atlanta area until 1 a.m. They said the flooding is a "dangerous and life-threatening situation." They recommend people in the area do not travel unless you are in an area that is flooding.

6:33 p.m. | Radar estimates that rain totals are between 1.5 inches and 2.5 inches and heavy rain continues to fall in the metro Atlanta area.

6:32 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Greene, Morgan, Newton and Walton counties until 7 p.m.

6:20 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Fulton, Cobb and DeKalb counties until 6:45 p.m.

6:07 p.m. | A flash flood warning has been issued for Fulton County until 12:15 a.m. 11Alive Meteorologist Melissa Nord said to beware of the storms "training," which can produce very heavy rain over a continued period of time.

5:58 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the Walton, Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale counties until 6:30 p.m.

5:57 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for most of north Georgia and metro Atlanta until 1 a.m.

5:24 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for DeKalb County until 5:45 p.m.
