Fallen tree kills teen in Clay County, NC, during wave of Memorial Day storms: Officials confirm

It happened in Clay County, above Towns County, Georgia, just a couple hours away from Atlanta.

CLAY COUNTY, North Carolina — A North Carolina teen was killed during the wave of storms that moved through early Memorial Day, according to emergency officials on Tuesday. 

It happened in Clay County, above Towns County, Georgia, just a couple hours away from Atlanta. 

Clay County officials said they were sent to the Penland Point Community Monday morning regarding a tree that had fallen on a camper trailer. Inside, they said they found a female victim, who is believed to be 18 years old.

Emergency crews said a large tree had been uprooted by heavy winds up to 50-70 mph.  

The girl killed is being described as a senior at Tuscola High School in Haywood County, NC. 

Emergency officials said she was visiting the Clay County area with friends over the long Memorial Day weekend.
