SAVANNAH, Ga. — A coastal Georgia town is cleaning up after a tornado swept through Friday evening.
According to 11Alive's NBC affiliate WSAV, the tornado touched down in Whitemarsh Island around 4 p.m.
The storm ripped off the roof of a local elementary school and left damage on the grounds. Trees and light poles were also knocked over at another middle school.
WSAV reported 20 people, including children, were trapped on the grounds at Oatland Island Wildlife Center due to 50 downed trees and power lines. They were eventually able to escape after the storm passed.

According to the Chatham County Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service had not issued any watches or warnings for the area, meaning the sirens did not go off.
No one was hurt.
The Red Cross said it has responders and volunteers on scene helping provide health services, emotional support and more. The agency estimates 12 homes were destroyed, some significantly.
