Man dies from fallen tree, thousands lose power after severe storms hit metro Atlanta

The strong storms unfortunately resulted in the death of a prominent real estate agent in Atlanta.

ATLANTA — Severe thunderstorms moved into metro Atlanta after impacting much of far north Georgia in the earlier part of Sunday afternoon and evening. The strong storms unfortunately resulted in the death of a prominent real estate agent in Atlanta.

A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for much of the metro Atlanta, including Banks, Barrow, Cherokee, Clarke, DeKalb, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Jackson and Madison counties.

Storms have a history of producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and large hail. There have already been reports in far north Georgia of trees down.

10:47 p.m. | The man who was killed after he was struck by a fallen tree near Buckhead Village during an outbreak of severe thunderstorms Sunday afternoon was identified as a well-known, top producing realtor in Atlanta. George Heery Jr. was 55 years old.

10:30 p.m. | Downed trees covered parts of the Atlanta area following the storms.

8:50 p.m. | An 11Alive viewer shared the following drone photos of the ominous clouds and thunderstorms above McDonough in Henry County Sunday evening as strong storms and damaging winds passed through.

8:15 p.m. | Hopewell Road is closed from Fox Hollow Run to Cogburn Road due to a downed powerline in Milton. There is a second road closure at Arnold Mill and Ranchette Road because of another downed powerline. Milton Police urge drivers to avoid the area.

7:54 p.m. | One man is dead after he was struck by a fallen tree near the Buckhead Village area in the area of 319 Delmont Drive NE, Atlanta Police said. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition where he died.

7:45 p.m. | A power pole snapped in half and a tree collapsed on a home during the strong storms in Douglasville.

7:21 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for parts of Spalding County and Troup County until 8:15 p.m.

7:16 p.m. | Georgia EMC is reporting a total of 83,781 power outages as of 7 p.m. Over 60,000 of those outages are in metro Atlanta.

7:04 p.m. | Georgia Power issued a statement to 11Alive saying some power will be restored in just minutes if they can just reroute power, but others will take "much longer" if poles and lines have been downed and need to be replaced.

6:45 p.m. | Georgia Power outage maps show that at least 76,000 customers have been affected in the metro Atlanta area.

6:30 p.m. | Thousands of people in metro Atlanta are without power as severe thunderstorms continue to roll through the area. There are currently 76 outages just in the Sandy Springs area alone, affecting more than 8,200 customers, according to Georgia Power.

6:15 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Carrollton, Cedartown and Bremen until 7 p.m.

6:10 p.m. | A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Monroe, Watkinsville and Social Circle until 6:45 p.m.

6:05 p.m. | 11Alive's SkyCam shows dark and ominous clouds in Rome as severe thunderstorms moved through the area.

6:02 p.m. | Meteorologist Nicole Hartford forecasts the severe thunderstorm outlook in a 6 p.m. update.
