ATLANTA — Tropical Storm Alberto formed in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday morning. It is the first named tropical system of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which is expected to be particularly active.
Alberto strengthened before making landfall near Tampico, Mexico. It was producing sustained winds of 50 mph with gusts of 65 mph.
As of the 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Alberto weakened to a tropical depression as it continues to move inland at 18 mph with 35 mph sustained winds.
It was a large tropical storm, producing tropical storm-force winds extending outward up to 460 miles north of the center. The winds are no longer impacting areas of Texas.
The center of Alberto has made landfall. As the center moves inland, rapid weakening is forecast, and Alberto is likely to dissipate over Mexico Thursday night.
The biggest impact of Alberto on the U.S. will be rain. Many locations across south Texas and northeast Mexico will pick up 5 to 10 inches of rain, and accumulations near 20 inches are possible across higher terrain in Mexico.
Heavy rain could produce considerable flooding.
Hurricane season is just beginning and runs through November. We will keep you updated on this storm and any others that may form throughout hurricane season.
There are two other areas we are watching for potential development as well.
One spot off of the Georgia coast has a medium chance for tropical development over the next seven days.
There is also a medium chance for tropical development down in the Bay of Campeche over the next seven days, which is the same area Tropical Storm Alberto had formed.
