ATLANTA — Although the odds are never in our favor, we can confirm that we will NOT have a white Christmas here across north Georgia. Instead, this year will be wet.
The 11Alive Weather Impact Team is tracking moisture moving in with a low-pressure system that will spread on and off scattered showers across the Peach State throughout Christmas Day. Wednesday evening, December 25, is also the first night of Hanukkah. Rain showers could impact any outdoor plans you have throughout the day.
Monday, before the holidays, will be a dry but cold day for any last-minute shopping or travel plans you have. A cool wedge of air will hold temperatures in the mid-40s for the city of Atlanta that afternoon. Although it will be a cold day, expect plenty of sunshine.
For Christmas Eve on Tuesday, that wedge will still be in place. As moisture works its way in, some clouds will begin to increase as the day wears on. Any better coverage of rain looks to hold off until Christmas Eve night, but a few showers could impact midnight mass or church services late Tuesday evening.
Although we are expecting rain showers to be moving in for the Night Before Christmas, we do not expect the weather to disrupt Santa and his reindeer in their sleigh from reaching celebrating boys and girls in Georgia. Rain showers will impact any of his elves driving around and could also play a role in airline travel. Winds shouldn't be too strong, limiting how large the weather impact will be.
Christmas morning, scattered showers continue pushing in. You may need umbrellas to head out to church services.
Some rain showers could also be at play for the second half of the day. Keep your indoor backup plans ready to go.
Although rain is in the forecast -- this is a forecast an entire week out. The weather forecast CAN and WILL change between now and then. We'll be updating this forecast in the coming days.
High temperatures for Christmas will be cooler-than-average, generally topping out in the low to mid-50s.
