ATLANTA — North Georgia's most widespread rain in nearly seven weeks will move in late Wednesday night and last into the Thursday morning commute.
The 11Alive Weather Impact Team is tracking ample moisture moving in ahead of a cold front that will set the stage for widespread rain that could be heavy at times.
This rain will set the stage for a slow, water-logged commute early Thursday. Roads will be wet, possibly with some standing water. Fallen leaves will add to the 'slick' factor on the early morning drive.
In advance of the rain, make sure the water has somewhere to go around your house! Clear out downspouts and clear leaves from the entrance of drains and storm drains.
How Much Rain?
Last week, we tracked widespread rain south and east of Atlanta. However, areas northwest of the city missed out on the rain. This time, everyone will get rain!
North of I-20, 1 to 2 inches of rain is likely. South of I-20, 1/2 inch to 1 inch of rain is likely.
Timeline
The lion's share of the rain moves in after 10 p.m. and will last into the Thursday morning commute.
Wednesday Evening
Spotty light showers are possible early Wednesday evening, but the widespread rain holds off until after 9 p.m. Winds will continue to be gusty, at times peak gusts topping 30 mph.
Wednesday Overnight
Widespread rain starts to move in as we near the midnight hour and will stay persistent through the overnight. As the morning commute gets underway, the rain is still widespread and could sometimes be heavy.
Wednesday Early Commute
Widespread rain is still possible at the start of the Wednesday morning commute. Areas of heavy rain are likely, as well as a few rumbles of thunder, mainly south.
Wednesday Mid-Morning
As the morning commute winds down, showers will taper off from west to east. Still, some pockets of heavy rain or embedded rumbles of thunder are possible in east Georgia around mid-morning. We should be drying out to the west.
Wednesday Afternoon
Everywhere should dry out for the afternoon. Some hints of sunshine may also return. But it will stay chilly! Highs will be in the upper 50s to low 60s.
