When to see the final supermoon of 2024 in north Georgia

The November full moon is known as the "beaver moon."

ATLANTA — Get ready for the final in a series of 4 consecutive supermoons of 2024!

This afternoon, the moon will reach its full stage and rise over Atlanta at 5:16 p.m. in the east-northeast sky.

Why is it called the "beaver moon?" According to the Farmer's Almanac, this is the time when beavers are often preparing for the winter. The November full moon is also known as the "frost moon," which seems a little more understandable in present-day life.

This supermoon is the last in a series of four that will appear in the night sky. As the moon rises, it may look slightly bigger and brighter than other full moons, as it is at its perigee (the closest point in the ellipse) in its orbit around the earth. Although there's a catchy name, supermoons are not rare. On average, we see 3 to 4 a year. The next supermoon is in October 2025.

Atlanta's forecast calls for clear skies Friday night and chilly temperatures. You'll be able to catch a glimpse of the supermoon any time in the overnight with the absence of clouds! The moon does not set until 8:08 a.m. Saturday morning.
