They report on it, naturally.
The group of 25 students are from the University of Georgia's Di Gamma Kappa digital broadcast society. They had been in New York City since Wednesday visiting broadcast networks and digital news and information companies, according to the group's advisor. But thanks to one of the biggest winter storms in history dumping record snowfall up and down the East Coast, their Sunday flight out of New York to Atlanta was cancelled.
11Alive News spoke to senior Ann Drinkard, a member of the group, and she said getting stranded was a total surprise.
"They really were only predicting just 6 to 12 inches," she said. "We knew it was coming, but we didn't know it was going to be some of the worst snow New York City's ever seen."
Drinkard says she remembers going to sleep on Saturday when only light snow was falling.
"When we woke up the next morning, and we saw everything was white, it was crazy," she said. "All of us are from Georgia and we've never seen that much snow in our lives!"
The students still managed to find the fun in the whole ordeal and jumped on the opportunity to put all of their schooling to good use. Drinkard said they wanted to create a video showcasing what things people in the city could still do despite the blizzard. So she and Savannah Wilson, Morgan Weeks,
Chelsea Beimfohr, Janai James and Mckenzie Lewis took to the streets to film and edit the video, all with an iPhone 6.
While Drinkard said she's not sure if the group will finally make it back to Georgia tonight, she said the experience was a proverbial teachable moment.
"Even though it was crazy, we survived blizzard and survived in the weather," she said. "Just to survive means we can do it once, and we can do it again. We've seen it first-hand, so it's beneficial if we move up there. We're prepared."
Looks like we've got a solid group of future journalists on our hands.
