ATLANTA -- From Midtown to Milton, surprised residents captured photos and video of pea-sized hail Monday afternoon.

11Alive Chief Meteorologist Chris Holcomb said the hail was caused by a cold core upper-level system. "It happens when a pocket of cold air in the upper levels of a system is cold enough to come down as hail instead of rain," he explained.

The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement on the strong cold core, but said no severe storms characterized by large hail or damaging winds were expected.

Holcomb was tracking the hail reports from Milton, Duluth, Atlanta, and along I-20 in DeKalb County. "The storm weakened as they moved through, so for those that saw hail, they didn't see it come down for long," he said. You can see the areas where the hail hit marked in grey on a map he created.
