ATLANTA — North Georiga could experience a "flash freeze" overnight Thursday into Friday morning.
Temperatures will drop 20 to 30 degrees in less than six hours early Friday. Temperatures Thursday night will be in the 40s and drop to 19 degrees early Friday morning. This fits the phenomenon of a flash freeze, which is when temperatures quickly drop to below freezing.
This is especially dangerous for wet roadways.
If the drop in temperatures occurs faster than the wet roads drying, people could see patchy black ice Friday morning in some areas.
11Alive Stormtrackers don't think this would be widespread. The wind will help to dry up the roads as the temperatures drop. This cold air is also very dry which will help to evaporate the moisture as the temperatures fall.
Any black ice would mainly be on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses. One's deck or outside steps could also turn slick with some light glazing.
Once temperatures fall below freezing, they are expected to stay below freezing for around 60 hours until Sunday afternoon.
