State and federal officials with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are continually monitoring the spread of the virus. They are also working hand-in-hand with the World Health Organization to track the spread around the world and to stop it.
Key Facts:
- There have been 1,517 deaths in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported death on March 5. Over the last 14 days (4/30-5/13), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 27.50. Over the previous 14-day period (4/16-4/29), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 34.14.
- There have been 35,427 cases confirmed in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported case on Feb. 1. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 654.79. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 661.86
- There have been 6,308 total patients hospitalized in Georgia during the pandemic, according to the Department of Public Health's cumulative total. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in new patients was 80.14
- Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in new patients was 140.29.
- The Georgia Emergency Management Agency began reporting current statewide hospitalizations on May 1. That day they reported 1,500 current hospitalizations. By the most recent report on May 13, there were 1,091 current hospitalizations.
- Gov. Brian Kemp's statewide shelter-in-place order expired at midnight on April 30. However, his order for the elderly and medically-fragile remains in effect until June 12.
- All public school buildings in Georgia are closed through the end of the school year
- Public Health Emergency remains in effect.
Gwinnett deputies help deliver meals to children
The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office is helping the community by delivering meals to students.
In a Facebook post, deputies said they joined Gwinnett County Public Schools staff to deliver the food.
"We enjoyed visiting with the kids and reminding them that our community cares about them," the post reads.

Stonecrest mask giveaway set for Friday
The City of Stonecrest is celebrating is 3rd birthday by having a free mask giveaway.
The event will be held at the new Stonecrest City Center on Friday, May 15 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. The center is located at 2994 Turner Hill Road, which is known as the old Sam's Club building.
Residents can simply drive up and practice social distancing during the giveaway.
A look at the latest COVID-19 cases in Georgia
The Georgia Department of Public Health announced new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday evening. As of 7 p.m., there are 35,427 confirmed cases of the virus and 1,517 deaths reported. This is slightly up from the 34,848 confirmed cases and 1,494 deaths that they announced on Tuesday evening.
Of the 35,427 confirmed cases, 3,614 are in Fulton, 2,632 are in DeKalb, 2,510 are in Gwinnett, 2,280 are in Cobb, 2,112 are in Hall, and 1,644 are in Dougherty.

Governor tours temporary medical units in Floyd County
Gov. Brian Kemp made a stop in Floyd County, Wednesday, to tour the temporary units set up in the county to help treat COVID-19 patients.
The temporary medical pods at Floyd Medical Center can house 20 beds to treat non-critical COVID-19 patients. Just feet away, another 100-bed temporary unit is set up in the parking deck.
Kemp, along with staff and local leaders, toured both facilities.
'Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta' star charged with fraud
A reality TV show cast member from Dacula was arrested on federal bank fraud charges arising from a Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”) loan that he obtained.
Maurice Fayne, who appeared on the show "Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta" and goes by the name "Arkansas Mo," obtained a loan for millions of dollars, authorities said. He was in a relationship with Karlie Redd and made multiple appearances on the show.
But how he spent the money raised red flags.
State to receive $200 million to increase testing capacity
The White House announced that Georgia will receive over $260 million in federal funding to increase testing capacity in the state.
“Testing is a critical element of our phased approach to get America back to work,” said Senator David Perdue. “This CARES Act funding will allow Georgia to expand its testing capacity and test as many people as possible, even asymptomatic individuals. As we continue to gradually reopen the economy, we must ensure our healthcare system has the testing capabilities and resources necessary to identify and contain COVID-19.”
Six Flags to use reservation system
If you plan to visit Six Flags Over Georgia when it reopens, you'll need to make a reservation.
The new guest reservation system will allow the park to manage daily attendance levels and avoid overcrowding in accordance with the CDC's recommendations on social distancing.
All guests will be required to make a reservation for a specific date on this website.
City of College Park reverses course
The City of College Park announced today it will postpone the reopening of City Hall and municipal operations to Monday, June 1.
"The decision comes with new data revealed on Tuesday, May 12, concerning seven-day trends related to the spread of COVID-19," they said in a news release.
Upon reopening, officials intend on a transitional process, with all rank and file employees returning to work and guests able to enter City Hall for appointments and utility bill payments.
Latest state numbers show more than 35K confirmed cases
The Georgia Department of Health announced new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday. As of 1:25 p.m., there are 35,332 confirmed cases of the virus and 1,505 deaths reported. This is slightly up from the 34,848 confirmed cases and 1,494 deaths that they announced on Tuesday evening.
Of the 35,332 confirmed cases, 3,606 are in Fulton, 2,619 are in DeKalb, 2,505 are in Gwinnett, 2,226 are in Cobb, 2,068 are in Hall and 1,643 are in Dougherty.

They said 6,259 patients have been hospitalized with COVID-19.

Speaker says lawmakers to return, but with precautions
Georgia House Speaker David Ralston says that the legislative session paused in March because of the coronavirus will resume on June 11 with some new policies and procedures in place. Ralston said in a memo Tuesday that staff would begin transitioning back to offices on June 1, with in-person committee meetings set to resume June 2. A report outlines procedures to be implemented before members return. The report says that people will have their temperature checked at the door and spaces will be “fogged” daily to protect against the virus. A spokesman for Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan says the Senate hasn’t agreed to the start date.
First shipment of COVID-19 treatment drug Remdesivir arrives
On Tuesday, Georgia received its first shipment of Remdesivir from the federal government, Governor Brian Kemp announced.
It is the first drug shown to help fight COVID-19, which has killed more than 290,000 people worldwide.
"I am very thankful to President Trump, Vice President Pence, and the Coronavirus Task Force for their leadership as we fight the spread of COVID-19," said Kemp.
Red Cross conducting multiple blood drives
Blood donations are still needed, and the Red Cross is still conducting drives - accounting for social distancing measures and all.
The organization says that while "people may not be thinking about blood donation" during the pandemic, "blood and platelets are needed daily to help patients battling disease and facing the unexpected."
Dobbins ARB to hold flyovers across north Georgia hospitals
The Dobbins Air Force Reserve's 94th Airlift Wing plans to fly its C-130H3 Hercules aircraft over north Georgia hospitals Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m. to salute healthcare workers, first responders and essential workers for their efforts during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, they said.
The C-130 flyover will begin in Marietta, before going to Kennesaw, Canton, Jasper, Dalton, Rome, Cartersville and Hiram.
