Morgan County child detained after bringing gun to middle school

Authorities said they don't believe the child intended to harm anyone

Morgan County authorities have taken a middle school student into custody after allegedly bringing a gun to school on Tuesday.

Authorities said the student brought the gun to Morgan County Middle School on Tuesday afternoon. Another student reported the gun to school officials who called in their resource officer.

"The student with the gun was immediately isolated for everyone's protection," the Morgan County Sheriff's Office said in a statement released on social media.

It turns out that the student didn't have any ammo and the weapon appeared to be older - and possibly not even functional. Authorities believe the middle schooler brought the gun to show off to friends.

Even so, the act of bringing a gun to school, already illegal in most schools across the U.S., has gained even more of the nation's focus after a shooting in Florida that killed 17 students. That shooting has also been followed by a rash of school threats and students bringing weapons to class.

So authorities in Morgan County used the opportunity to share a word of advice with parents.

"Parents.....please speak to your children and use this as an example that 'When you see something, say something'," the social media message read.

The student in question was taken to a juvenile detention center.
