Reward increases to $5K in security guard’s murder case

Almost a month later and no suspects have been identified. The lead detective feel strongly that Young was specifically target and this was not a random act of violence.

BUFORD, Ga. — The reward for information on a security guard who was killed at his front door has increased to $5,000.

On Nov. 17, 43-year-old George Young was coming home from work after a late-night security shift when he was shot. He hadn't even come in the door when family members inside said they heard gunshots.

The shooting happened on Montauk Hill Drive, a residential road off of Hamilton Mill Road and Ridge Road. Young's family revealed that a house key was found inside the lock but it was not turned. Young had been working security at Lenox Mall for a performer that evening.

Almost a month later, no suspects have been identified. The lead detective feels strongly that Young was specifically targeted and that this was not a random act of violence. Preliminary evidence at the scene suggested that Young was shot by someone waiting for his arrival on his front porch, according to a press release.

Young was a father of three children: ages 8, 13 and 17. His wife of 22 years, Tia Young, along with her mother, brother and the children were home at the time of the incident.

"He was a really good guy," Tia said. "Everybody loved George."

Tia called him the backbone of the household. Without him, she said there's just a huge void.

"My oldest son is just very, very hurt. He was very close to his dad. My middle son is hurt but he's more angry. He's just furious that somebody would do this to his dad and get away with it," she explained. "My 8 year old, he's much younger, and his heart is just broken. He cries constantly, almost every night."

Tia said for the life of her, she can't understand why someone would want to target her husband.

"I mean, you took an innocent man from his wife and his three children, and a host of other friends and family that really, really loved him," she said. "If you can find it in your heart, anywhere, turn yourself in and just come clean. It would mean the world to my family."
