DOOLY CO. — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is still investigating a shooting that took the life of a U.S. Army soldier on leave Easter morning. We spent the morning talking to family and community members about the shooting that has shaken Dooly County.
On Easter day, the scene on Pine Street was different than usual. Willie Robinson who lives near Klub Money said an unfamiliar sound woke him up.
"Well, about 3, 3 a.m., a minute or two, I heard some gunshots," Robinson said.
Robinson said he knew the club was having an afterparty for Dooly Day, but he said things did not seem right early on.
"I have never seen that many cars around here before. It was just unusual that particular night," Robinson said.
Robinson soon found out that 25-year-old Freddie McKenzie Junior was a victim of the gunshots he heard. According to GBI agent J.T. Ricketson, a fight escalated at Klub Money and moved outside. Ricketson said multiple bullets were fired hitting Margaret Rembert's home.
Rembert told us she was on the phone with 911 operators while she was at her home laying on the ground. Rembert said the shooting went on for at least 10 minutes with the gunfire only pausing briefly.
Rembert is now repairing her home, while Shaenita James, the sister of McKenzie, is preparing to bury her brother.
"Me and my twin, we immediately rushed over here to the Crisp County Hospital, and that's when we learned that he was no longer here with us," James said.
James said the family has a message with the hope of finding some closure after the untimely killing of her brother.
"We begging for anybody, just know -- don't leave no names, leave a note, throw it outside my mom house, just say something, I don't care how, just, please," James said.
