Motorcycle sparks massive fire at Shell gas station off I-75 in Atlanta

ATLANTA — Smoke billowed for miles after a large fire broke out at a gas station off I-75 in Atlanta Friday afternoon.

11Alive SkyTracker flew over a Shell gas station at the 1600 block of Northside Drive, where heavy smoke was seen as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

The Atlanta Police Department said officers are assisting with traffic control and have Northside Drive closed in the area.

Atlanta Fire officials at the scene said the flames began around 12:40 p.m. Investigators believe the fire was triggered by a motorcycle. The flames quickly spread from the bike to a car, which sparked the fire, officials added.

A spokesperson for Atlanta Fire said despite what the fire looks like, it could have been worse.

“A motorcycle caught fire at the pump when getting gas somehow. It hit and transferred to another car beside it. But fortunately, the owner of this gas station hit the emergency valve and stopped it completely so that when emergency crews came onsite, they went into a defensive operation," said Anare Holmes with Atlanta Fire.

Firefighters are still working to put out hot spots. Officials said there were no injuries and that investigators are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.
