An Atlanta Police Officer was struck by an SUV while investigating an accident Wednesday morning.

According to Atlanta Police Sgt. John Chafee, several vehicles slid into each other on the ice that is coating Lenox Road, as it passes over Georgia 400.

Officer Kwaneeta Smith was outside her police cruiser beginning an investigation when a driver coming off of Georgia 400 turned onto Lenox Road and slid on the ice. That vehicle struck a stationary SUV that was one of the vehicles involved in the initial wreck. That collision pushed the SUV into the officer.

Someone passing by stopped to help the officer, and used her car radio to call for help.

Smith, said to be in a lot of pain, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. She was said to be alert, conscious and breathing. After a few hours, she was released from the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that caused the accident was issued a citation for failure to maintain lane.

Atlanta Police closed the GA 400 southbound ramp into Lenox Road following the wrecks because of dangerous ice, but by early afternoon had reopened it.

Smith is assigned to Field Operations, Mobile Patrol and has been with the department since December of 2010.
