ATLANTA – United States Ambassador Andrew Young has endorsed Keisha Lance Bottoms for the next mayor of Atlanta.
During his endorsement for Lance Bottoms on Wednesday, Young told a story of how he’s known the Bottoms family for years and said how it’s natural to want to support them.
“I basically want to continue what we’ve been doing here in Atlanta,” Young said.
He discussed the social contract of Atlanta and how it’s made the city different from the rest. As the business community grows, the city of Atlanta sees to it that the community grows with it.
“[Lance Bottoms and her husband] have had successful careers in law for at least 20 years in the city of Atlanta,” Young said. “They represent the results of this social contact.”
Lance Bottoms will go head-to-head with Mary Norwood in a Dec. 5 runoff to determine who will be Atlanta's 60th mayor. Both women are members of Atlanta's city council.
At Atlanta City hall, former mayoral candidate Vincent Fort spoke about the insurgent campaign he ran that focused on issues of equity in the city.
“City hall has not done a good job of maintaining those neighborhoods and protecting those neighborhoods and bringing those neighborhoods into the mainstream of the city,” Fort said when discussing areas like Bankhead and Hamilton Road.
Fort said whoever becomes the next mayor ought to have an agenda to deal with those issues.
When asked about who he endorses, Fort said he is remaining neutral at this time.
