Teen facing charges in South Gwinnett High School threat

The student's comments led to a police investigation and public concern

A Gwinnett County tenth-grader is facing charges after being implicated in a social media threat against his school.

According to school officials, the 16-year-old student is facing terroristic threats charges after a message posted to social media gained the attention of the school resource officer and the Snellville Police Department.

The principal of South Gwinnett High School, the location to which the threat was directed, released a note to parents on Saturday. In it, she said that the school system responded quickly and, now, the student will face school code violations in addition to the charges added by police.

"Acts that threaten the well-being of our school community will not be tolerated," Principal Monique Lee said. "We take all threats of this manner very seriously."

She also took the opportunity to thank the community for their prompt response to the threat and said her administrative staff at the high school would be willing to answer other questions parents may have.

"Together we can keep our community safe," she said.

It's only the latest threat to schools both around the nation and in metro Atlanta since the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida that left 17 dead.

The threats have involved several schools with several sent across social media. All have resulted in extensive investigations and, in many cases, arrests.

It's also not the first incident related to guns at South Gwinnett. Just months earlier, in 2017, a student was found with a gun in his backpack and immediately taken into custody.
